Derrell Slaughter is a big man of 6’ 5”, at least. Because of his formidable presence, his soft-spoken gentleness can be surprising. However, don’t mistake that for weakness at any level. Involved and energetic, he is firm in his values and his beliefs.
Hailing from Metro Detroit, his strong work ethic has gained him a large network of friends and supporters. He is known for his involvement with the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, The Ingham County Board of Health, the Democratic Party of Ingham County, the Old Everett Neighborhood Association, and more.
When asked why he is running, he says, “People have given me a chance, they helped and supported me. I know it is time for me to give back .”
Investment along the Southside corridors is one of his passions: “South Lansing is my home and I know it has a lot to offer. I will support our community’s current rejuvenation efforts by working with local economic development agencies, and my counterparts at the City of Lansing.”
As Chairman of the Ingham County Board of Health, Slaughter is also passionate about accessible healthcare. “Without healthy residents, our community can’t grow. I will always fight to ensure our community health center has the resources it needs to keep us all healthy and thriving.”
In his many roles, Slaughter has worked with local law enforcement to promote more progressive policing policies. “I want to make sure everyone can enjoy our public spaces without fear of their neighbors, or those who are supposed to keep them safe.”
Derrell says he is working hard to win, and, “I’ll worker harder after I win.”
