4th Annual Idlewild Empowerment, Education and Music Festival Weekend

IDLEWILD, MICHIGAN – June 18, 2018 – The 4th Annual Idlewild Weekend event takes place on Saturday, July 14, 2018 and Sunday, July 15, 2018 at the Historic Idlewild and Cultural Center. Each day starting at 11am and will include a full day of entertainment and education through live musical performances and tributes to performers of Idlewild’s historical music legacy. The lineup includes a vocal tribute to Della Reese by Flint native Ren Lowe, Jackie Wilson tribute by LaRonn Dolley, guest speakers include son and daughter of legendary Jackie Wilson, Anthony and Brenda Wilson, Carlean Gill, a former Idlewild Fiesta Doll and a historic presentation by Rose Hammond of Grand Rapids; just to name a few. This year we have enhanced our youth programming by adding more talented youth to our performance lineup, and two breakout sessions: Girl Talk hosted by Dr. Fawn Coffey Ukpolo and Boys to Men with host Kevin Livingston, Founder, 100Suits. Each segment will be a catalyst to help educate and engage youth and adults in the rich history and impact of music on the culture of Idlewild. The Weekend event is made possible in part by Bishop RC Blakes, Jr., Express Employment Professionals, JB Enterprize 3, WhiteCaps Community Foundation, BetterMade Snacks, Starpointe Photography, Michigan Bread Co., Absopure Water, Magnum Coffee, Towne Club Soda, White Towel Service, Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the National Endowment of Humanities. 

About Idlewild, Michigan: This Idlewild weekend event is held to commemorate and celebrate the history of well-known African-American entertainers and professionals who owned property and performed at the Historic Resort prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Known as the ‘Black Eden’, this location was one of the few resorts in the United States where African-Americans could vacation and purchase property. The National Resource Team applauded the Idlewild community for holding on to the land; approximately 3,000 acres. It is historically, the largest land based African American resort ever assembled in the USA. Idlewild is a rare and valuable national resource with physical and cultural.
