Mayor Andy Schor announced today that he is putting all options on the table for the future use of the property where the current Lansing City Market resides. One option will include sale of the land and building so that a private entity can invest and repurpose this important waterfront property. To do this, voters need to approve the sale of the land, as the building sits on parkland.
The proposal will go before the Planning and Parks boards then will be considered by the Lansing City Council. If City Council passes the proposal by August 13th, residents of Lansing will vote in November 2018 on whether or not the parcel can be sold.
“We must reactivate the City Market property and are placing all options on the table. In order to do that, we need to include the option for a private entity to buy the market,” said Mayor Andy Schor. “As such, we are sending to council a ballot question allowing for the option to sell the land where the market is located. We have to do this in order to have the option to sell Lansing parkland. Lansing residents should decide if we include sale of this property as an option for reuse of this space, which is part of an active riverfront.”
After many years of subsidizing the City Market with tax dollars, even after the property was de- certified as a market by the federal government, City Council recently voted to eliminate the subsidy provided from the City of Lansing. Due to the elimination of half of the subsidy from the City of Lansing budget (reduction from $80,000 to $40,000), the building will close around Labor Day, potentially adding unnecessary blight to Lansing’s riverfront. The riverfront is an important part of the economic activity and growth of Lansing, and this vote of the people will give new options on activating the property.
