The percentage of LGBTQ adults in the U.S. now stands at 7.1%. That figure has doubled over the past decade.

Researchers with the Gallup public opinion organization say if younger Americans continue to come out at increasing rates, they predict the proportion of adults in this country who identify as LGBTQ will exceed 10% in the near future.

According to recent polling from Gallup, more than 1 in 5 (21%) of Generation Z adults identify as LGBTQ. *[Gen Z born 1997-2012].

That’s double the number of Millennials identifying as LGBTQ at 10.5%. *[Millennials born 1981-1996].

Self-described homosexuals in Generation X make up 4.2%. *[Gen X born 1965-1980].

Fewer than 3% of Baby Boomers identify as LGBTQ. *[Boomers born 1946-1964.

While among the so-called “Silent Generation,” just 0.8% describe themselves as LGBTQ. *[Silent Gen born 1928-1945].
