LINDEMANN TO HOLD SCOPE HEARING ON MONTGOMERY DRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Ingham County Drain Commissioner Patrick E. Lindemann will host citizens at a meeting to discuss engineering design options for the Montgomery Drain. The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 19th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Foster Community Center, Room 213.

“Independent testing shows that the outlet from the Montgomery Drain contributes 50,000 to 75,000 pounds of harmful pollutants to the Red Cedar River each year,” Lindemann said. “Acting on mandates in the Federal Clean Water Act, the City of Lansing and Ingham County petitioned my office to correct the problem.”

The Montgomery Drain Drainage District lies on Lansing’s east side, encompassing retail and residential properties in the City of Lansing, Charter Township of Lansing, and the City of East Lansing. The Michigan Department of Transportation and the Ingham County Road Department also operate roads in the District.

The Drain Commissioner is developing a plan for the Montgomery Drain that will reduce pollution using a variety of surface features, such as constructed wetlands, ponds, and rain gardens. Preliminary investigation also found failing underground pipes that will be repaired or replaced as part of the project.

While not required by law, Lindemann is hosting this public discussion to gain input from citizens. Drawings and renderings of the preliminary design will be available for viewing. Lindemann will present a slide presentation and answer questions regarding the project.

“The plan, when finalized, will reflect natural systems for storing and cleaning storm water,” Lindemann said. “I’m ready to make this drain project happen and I want the people in our community to see how cleaning water - one drop at a time - will benefit our area.”
