Book Drive Give Away

Sunday, February 27th from Noon to 4pm at Socialight Society in the Lansing Mall

5454 W Saginaw Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917

(Lansing, MI) – For the second year in a row, Artist Mila Lynn of Mind of Mila, and Lorin Cumberbatch of Skin Studio 211, bring the Black Book Drive to the Greater Lansing Community. This year, the duo is partnering with Nyshell Lawrence of Socialight Society, a community-centered bookshop that specifically caters to Black women who often lack representation in traditional bookstores. The 2022 Black Book Drive has been collecting donations throughout the month of February, and the money raised (currently over $1,750.00) will be used to purchase children’s books that feature Black characters.

“It is important for us to continue to do this in our community because our children need diverse reading material,” says Lynn. “Representation matters, we don’t get to choose what is read and studied in schools, so this is our chance to make other narratives accessible and also highlight Black Business Owners in the community.” Monetary donations are being collected until February 27th. If you have your own books that include Black and Brown characters you can donate them as well. The books will be given out on Sunday, February 27th, from Noon to 4:00pm at Socialight Society in the Lansing Mall. Mila, Lorin, & Nyshell encourage families, and friends to come get a free book of their own to enjoy.
