In every generation, there are people who recognize that the systems around them were never designed for everyone to thrive. Instead of waiting for change, they begin building something new.
For Ali Bennett, that moment came during one of the most transformative seasons of her life.
After welcoming a new baby, Bennett found herself facing an internal battle many working mothers quietly carry. In her corporate career, she was often confronted with difficult choices, whether to comply with expectations that conflicted with her personal values, or to speak up and risk the financial stability her family depended on.
It was a tension that weighed heavily.
“I didn’t want to live in a constant loop where I had to choose between my values and providing for my family,” Bennett reflects.
During that time of reflection, she began searching for community. She started connecting with other local leaders, particularly Black entrepreneurs in Lansing, Michigan, hoping to find people who understood the crossroads she was standing at.
What she discovered was both inspiring and eye-opening. Entrepreneurship offered a path toward freedom, a way to create work aligned with her values rather than constantly trying to fit into systems that didn’t reflect them.
But stepping into that world brought another challenge. Where do you even begin?
Like many first-generation entrepreneurs, Bennett found that while resources for starting a business do exist, they are often scattered, difficult to navigate, or hidden behind networks that many aspiring founders have never had access to.
That realization became the foundation for Grassroots Giving, the organization Bennett launched in Lansing in 2023.
Grassroots Giving was built on a simple but powerful belief, that communities already hold the knowledge, talent, and resources needed to support one another. What is often missing is connection.
Bennett describes it as each person holding a small piece of the puzzle.
“When we come together and share knowledge, experiences, and resources, we create an ecosystem where entrepreneurs support each other and our communities can truly sustain themselves.”
Through Grassroots Giving, Bennett works to help first-generation entrepreneurs navigate the early stages of business development by connecting them to tools, knowledge, and community support that can often feel out of reach.
But at the heart of her work lies something even deeper. Motherhood.
“At my core, the most important identity I carry is that I am a mother,” Bennett says. “That comes before everything else.”
She believes mothers are often the backbone of families and communities, pouring endless energy into making sure those around them thrive. Yet too often, women are taught to prioritize everyone else’s well-being while neglecting their own dreams and purpose.
Through her work, Bennett hopes to remind women, especially mothers, that they deserve joy and fulfillment in their own lives as well.
“We deserve to build lives that support our families while also nurturing our passions,” she says.
“If women can create opportunities where they can earn a living, be present for their children, and do work that truly speaks to their soul, then we begin to redefine what success looks like.”
For Bennett, leadership is not about individual success. It is about building pathways for others.
Her advice to the next generation of women leaders is both practical and empowering.
Trust your intuition. If you find yourself constantly fighting to belong in a space where your voice is dismissed or your ideas are blocked, it may not be a signal to work harder to fit in. It may be a sign that something better is waiting.
“You can build a life that holds all the things that matter to you,” Bennett says.
She also reminds emerging leaders that growth rarely happens in isolation.
“Surround yourself with people who challenge you, who mentor you, and who are willing to help you grow. Being coachable will take you much further than trying to have all the answers.”
And perhaps most importantly, she emphasizes the responsibility that comes with leadership.
As you rise, reach back.
“Leadership is about lifting others as you climb. Community is everything.”
Through Grassroots Giving, Ali Bennett is helping create a future where entrepreneurship is not reserved for the privileged few, but accessible to the communities that have long been left out of the conversation.
One connection, one resource, and one opportunity at a time.
