“April 20th, I Still Hear You”

April doesn’t ask me to grieve…
it reminds me to listen.
Because your voice never left.
It just changed rooms.
From radio waves
to memory…
from microphones
to movement…
from you
to me.
They call this National Poetry Month,
but for me…
it’s the month I hear you the clearest.
In the way I speak with purpose.
In the way I carry your name like responsibility.
In the way I build something
that refuses to be small.
You weren’t just talking on air…
you were shaping a city.

And now…
I walk into rooms
you once had to fight to enter,
carrying a legacy
that refuses to sit quietly.
I saw you in the studio…
focused.
Certain.
Already knowing
what your voice could do.
I see you in these photos…
with family,
with community,
with love wrapped all around you.
And I realize…
you didn’t just leave memories.
You left direction.
So today,
I don’t say goodbye.
I say—
I hear you.
Happy Birthday, Daddy.
Love Yanice
