LANSING, Mich.— On the eve of what would have been his 101st birthday, Monday, May 18,
the Malcolm X Community Commission of Lansing was recognized during the Lansing City
Council meeting through the presentation of a resolution and mayoral proclamation honoring the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Malcolm X and his historic ties to Lansing. The resolution presented by the Lansing City Council recognized Malcolm X’s formative years in
Lansing, where he attended Pleasant Grove Elementary School and West Junior High School.
The resolution acknowledged how his early experiences with racial injustice, displacement,
family resilience, and community helped shape the worldview that would later influence one of
the most significant human rights advocates of the twentieth century. In addition, Andy Schor has presented a proclamation recognizing Malcolm X’s continued influence on conversations surrounding justice, self-determination, education, dignity, and
community empowerment.
The Malcolm X Community Commission of Lansing was established in 2025 to honor, preserve, and advance the legacy of Malcolm X in his hometown through initiatives centered on
education, economic justice, civic engagement, and community-led action. The Commission is
also working to strengthen connections between the key communities that shaped Malcolm X’s life and legacy, from his birthplace in Omaha, to his hometown of Lansing, to the lived experiences that connected him to Inkster, and ultimately to New York, where his life was
tragically cut short.
As part of the commemoration of Malcolm X’s 101st birthday, the Commission also announced a yearlong initiative, “Malcolm X 101,” dedicated to educating, empowering, and engaging residents around his teachings, legacy, and continued relevance today. Through community conversations, educational programming, cultural events, and public engagement opportunities, the Commission aims to inspire deeper understanding and action rooted in the principles Malcolm X championed throughout his life. Community members are encouraged to join the Malcolm X 101 initiative throughout the coming year as Lansing continues to honor and uplift the legacy and work of Malcolm X.
