The NFL has officially released its 2026 regular season schedule, giving football fans across the country, including Detroit Lions fans here in Michigan, an early look at the matchups, holiday games and primetime moments that will shape the season. The league’s 2026 schedule includes 272 games across 18 weeks, with games played on six different days of the week and across eight countries.
Among the biggest schedule highlights, the NFL season will open on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the New England Patriots visit the Seattle Seahawks. It marks the league’s first Wednesday season opener since 2012.
The league will also debut a new Thanksgiving Eve game, with the Green Bay Packers visiting the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, Nov. 25, airing on Netflix.
For Michigan fans, the Detroit Lions will open their season at home against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 13, before heading into a national spotlight matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football in Week 2. The Lions will also continue their Thanksgiving tradition, hosting the Chicago Bears at Ford Field on Thursday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. ET.
The 2026 schedule also reflects the NFL’s continued international expansion, with nine international games, the most ever in a single season. The league will play regular-season games in new cities including Melbourne, Paris and Rio de Janeiro. NFL officials note that some late-season games remain subject to flexible scheduling, including matchups in Weeks 16, 17 and 18.
For fans, the schedule release is more than a list of games. It marks the beginning of planning season: road trips, watch parties, family traditions and those familiar Sunday conversations that start with, “Who do we play this week?” And in Detroit, one thing is already clear: Lions fans will have plenty to circle on the calendar.
