Whether you're a property manager, a paving contractor, or a homeowner caring for your driveway, if you want to maintain asphalt, you need the right equipment. Asphalt deals with traffic and changing weather throughout the year, so different maintenance jobs call for different tools. Some equipment prepares the pavement before treatment, while other tools handle the repair itself. Here are 10 types of asphalt maintenance equipment, from filling cracks to applying sealcoat, and what each one does.
Crack Cleaning Machines Go Below the Surface
Dirt doesn't stay on top of damaged pavement. It settles inside open cracks, where a regular broom can't reach it. A crack cleaning machine removes that material before fresh filler goes into the opening.
You want the filler touching the asphalt itself rather than resting on grit that can move underneath it. The machine reaches into the crack and pulls out loose material that has collected below the surface. That preparation gives the repair product direct contact with the pavement walls as it enters the opening and begins to set.
Crack Melters Keep Filler Ready to Apply
Rubberized crack filler starts as solid material, so it needs controlled heat before you can send it into damaged pavement. A crack melter warms the product until it reaches a liquid consistency that can move through the application system.
Temperature control is a major part of this job. If the material isn't hot enough, it becomes difficult to direct into narrow cracks. Excessive heat can also affect the filler during application. A dedicated melter gives you a controlled way to prepare the product while keeping enough material ready as you move across the repair area.
Asphalt Blowers Move Loose Debris Out of the Way
An asphalt blower uses concentrated airflow to remove dust and loose material before sealcoat goes down. On a large paved area, it covers more ground than hand sweeping and reaches debris that settles into shallow surface texture.
That makes it useful for parking lots and longer driveways where surface prep would otherwise take more time. By clearing away grit before application, the blower leaves the asphalt ready for direct contact with the coating.
Wire Brooms Break Up Packed-In Dirt
Some debris doesn't move when you blow air across it. Dirt can become packed into rough asphalt, especially around older damage where traffic has pressed material into the surface over time.
A wire broom uses stiff bristles to loosen that buildup. The bristles work into textured pavement and pull material out of shallow spaces that softer sweeping may leave behind. After the dirt breaks loose, you can remove it before repair material goes down. This tool gives you more abrasion than a standard broom without bringing powered cleaning equipment into a smaller prep job.
Sealcoating Squeegees Put the Material in Your Hands
A sealcoating squeegee spreads liquid sealer directly across the asphalt. Its wide rubber edge pushes the coating over the pavement while giving you direct control over where the material goes.
That control is especially handy near the perimeter of a smaller paved area. You can move the sealer toward an edge without sending spray onto an adjoining surface. The rubber edge also presses material across shallow pavement texture as you work. For jobs that don't call for a larger spray system, a squeegee gives you a straightforward way to distribute the coating by hand.
A Sealcoating Spray System Handles Larger Areas
Another type of sealcoating applicator is the spray system. This is a tank-based machine that pumps sealer through a hose so you can apply it across the pavement without spreading the entire coating by hand.
The type of sealcoating equipment that’s right for your job depends on factors like the size of the paved area and the amount of sealer you need to apply; larger properties can benefit from the capacity of a machine like this, while smaller jobs may be easier to handle with a squeegee and a smaller supply of sealer.
Hand Tampers Belong on Smaller Patches
Fresh patch material needs compression after it goes into a pothole or another recessed area. If it stays loose, traffic can shift the material and weaken the repair.
A hand tamper presses the patch down with a flat metal base, making it a practical option for smaller damaged sections. Its compact size also lets you work along the edges of the repair, where the new material needs to sit firmly against the surrounding asphalt.
Plate Compactors Bring More Force to a Repair
A wider asphalt patch takes much more effort to compact by hand. A plate compactor handles that job with a vibrating metal plate that moves across the repair surface.
The vibration packs the new material together while the machine’s weight presses it downward. That gives you more even compression across a broader area than a hand tamper can provide. For larger repairs, powered compaction also reduces the amount of repeated manual work needed before traffic returns.
Infrared Heaters Soften Asphalt Already in Place
Not every damaged section needs to be cut out immediately. An infrared asphalt heater raises the temperature of existing pavement until the material softens enough to work again.
The warmed asphalt can then be loosened and reshaped within the repair area. Fresh material also joins the heated pavement without meeting a completely cold edge. That gives you another option for uneven areas or surface damage that hasn't reached the point of full removal. Instead of throwing out the existing asphalt first, you get to work with material that's already part of the pavement.
Pavement Edgers Keep Sealcoat Inside the Boundary
Sealcoat gets harder to control near concrete or another surface that shouldn’t receive the coating. A pavement edger gives you a smaller application area, so you can work closer to the edge without spreading sealer beyond the asphalt.
That extra control is especially useful around parking lot perimeters, where larger equipment can be difficult to maneuver. The narrower edge lets you finish those sections more precisely and keep the coating where it belongs.
Match The Equipment to the Pavement in Front of You
You don't need every asphalt tool for every property. The equipment you use should match the condition in front of you and the maintenance job you're performing. A small crack calls for different equipment than a worn surface that needs a fresh coating.
