John James: From Military Service to Michigan's Race for Governor
The Chronicle News | Candidate Profile Election 2026

LANSING, Mich. — U.S. Rep. John James is seeking Michigan's highest elected office, bringing a background in military service, business leadership and Congress to the 2026 gubernatorial race. The Republican candidate is campaigning on a platform that emphasizes economic opportunity, tax relief, education reform and government accountability. His candidacy follows two unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. Senate and his election to Congress representing Michigan's 10th District. As voters prepare for the November 3 general election, James is presenting his experience in the military and private sector as part of his case for leading the state.
James is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as an Army aviation officer, flying AH-64 Apache helicopters. Following his military service, he joined his family's business, James Group International, where he held leadership responsibilities in the automotive supply chain and logistics industry. His transition from military service to business and ultimately politics has been a central part of his public biography. James has frequently drawn on those experiences when discussing leadership, economic development and the relationship between government and private enterprise.
James has made reducing Michigan’s state income tax one of the central proposals of his gubernatorial campaign. He has outlined a plan to begin with a 25 percent reduction and eventually eliminate the tax, arguing that lower taxes would allow families to retain more of their earnings and encourage business investment. His campaign says spending reviews, the elimination of waste and economic growth would help offset lost revenue. However, eliminating the income tax would have significant implications for state finances, and the proposal would require legislative action and a detailed plan for maintaining public services.
Education is another major component of James’ campaign platform. He has proposed expanding educational options for families, strengthening early literacy instruction through phonics-based teaching and increasing opportunities for students to pursue skilled trades. His proposals also include participating in a federal scholarship tax-credit program and limiting cellphone use in classrooms. James argues that students should graduate with practical skills and stronger preparation for employment, college or military service.
On energy and affordability, James has called for changes to Michigan’s energy policies and greater oversight of utility costs. His proposals include limiting increases in regulated residential utility bills, improving accountability for power companies and reviewing energy regulations that he believes contribute to higher costs. He has also emphasized reducing barriers to business development and accelerating permitting processes. These proposals reflect his broader argument that economic growth and lower operating costs can help Michigan attract employers and retain workers.
Government transparency and accountability have also featured prominently in James’ campaign. He has proposed reviewing a decade of state expenditures, increasing resources for Michigan’s auditor general and expanding public access to government records. James has argued that identifying wasteful spending and improving oversight could restore public confidence in state institutions. His campaign has also called for restrictions on certain political fundraising activities and additional legislative oversight of emergency executive powers.
James’ political career includes unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaigns in 2018 and 2020 before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. He was reelected in 2024 and currently serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which addresses issues including health care, energy and telecommunications. His congressional experience has placed him in national policy discussions while representing communities in southeastern Michigan. His campaign for governor represents an effort to move from federal legislative service into statewide executive leadership.
As Michigan approaches Election Day, James is asking voters to consider his proposals for tax reform, education, economic development and government oversight. His plans would require cooperation with state lawmakers, and questions remain about the financial and administrative effects of several proposals. The outcome of the November 3 election will determine who succeeds term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. For voters evaluating James’ candidacy, his record in Congress and the details of his proposed policies offer a basis for examining how he would approach the responsibilities of governor.
