City of Lansing Launches Eighth Annual Coat Drive to Help Families Stay Warm This Winter

As temperatures begin to fall across Michigan, the City of Lansing is calling on residents to help ensure their neighbors have the clothing they need to stay warm this winter. Mayor Andy Schor announced the city’s eighth annual coat drive, collecting new and gently used winter coats, hats and gloves for children and adults in need. The collection continues through Friday, October 16, 2026. Donated items will be distributed during Community Connect on Thursday, November 19, at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Lansing.
The annual initiative brings together city officials, community organizations and residents to address a basic need as colder weather approaches. Organized by Lansing’s Human Relations and Community Services Department, the drive encourages donations of usable winter clothing. All sizes are welcome, with a particular need for larger men’s coats. Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners is also supporting this year’s collection.
Mayor Schor urged residents to donate coats in good condition that are no longer being used or to purchase extra gloves while shopping. He said preparing neighbors for winter takes a collective effort. Interim Human Relations and Community Services Director Delvata Moses emphasized that every coat represents dignity, compassion and community support. The city hopes the drive will help residents face Michigan’s colder months with greater security.
Residents can donate at Lansing City Hall, 124 W. Michigan Ave.; Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Ave.; Gier Community Center, 2400 Hall St.; Schmidt Community Center, 5825 Wise Rd.; Letts Community Center, 1220 W. Kalamazoo St.; and Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners, 2815 E. Saginaw St. Donation containers are located inside each participating facility. New and gently used coats, hats and gloves for children and adults are accepted. The deadline is Friday, October 16.
The donated clothing will be distributed during Community Connect on Thursday, November 19, 2026. The event will take place at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 500 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lansing. The distribution is intended to connect people in need with winter clothing before the coldest months arrive. Residents are encouraged to contribute before Friday’s deadline.
