For years, DJ Cutt Nice has used music not only to entertain, but to educate, uplift, and preserve culture throughout the Lansing community and beyond. Known as “The 45 Advocate,” DJ Cutt Nice has built a reputation as a respected DJ, music historian, collector, and community voice dedicated to keeping the art of DJing alive for future generations. His passion for music, vinyl culture, storytelling, and community engagement has inspired countless people through both performance and mentorship.
Now, his impact will be celebrated in a brand-new way. DJ Cutt Nice will be featured in the upcoming “I Know I Can: A Chronicle Kids Community Coloring Book,” a special project created by The Chronicle News and Chronicle Publishing Co. to help children see real people from their own community represented in positive careers, leadership roles, and creative professions.
His featured page, titled “I Know I Can Be a DJ,” encourages children to explore creativity, music, confidence, and self-expression while learning about the important role DJs play in culture and community.
As The Chronicle News celebrates 40 years of serving the community, the evening is designed to do far more than honor history. The gala is intended to strengthen partnerships, inspire future leaders, support youth empowerment initiatives, elevate local entrepreneurs, and continue building a platform where culture, storytelling, creativity, and opportunity intersect.
The gala theme, “Life, Love & Legacy,” reflects not only the history of the publication, but also the people who carried it, supported it, advertised with it, grew up reading it, and helped sustain it across generations.
In many ways, stories like Shirley M. Carter-Powell’s represent exactly what legacy looks like, resilience turned into service, pain transformed into purpose, and survival used to uplift others walking through difficult seasons of life.
The Chronicle’s story has always been deeply connected to the community itself.
And after 40 years, the mission continues. Because legacy is not only about where you’ve been. It’s about what you build next.
