MASON, MI - Today, over 60 volunteers showed up for the Lawrence campaign’s first volunteer event of the general election. Mason (population 8250) is the site of two proposed hyperscale data centers, which have generated widespread, bipartisan backlash in response to the projects.
Lawrence has personally spoken out at multiple local Township meetings against the proposals and earned the support of local community members across the political spectrum. The 60+ volunteers at today’s event included both Republican and independent supporters of Lawrence’s campaign.
Marcus, a Republican community leader in Mason acknowledged, “I’m more on the Republican side,” but said, “these are issues you can reach people on and that is what Will Lawrence has been doing. I cannot ignore that.” He closed by saying, “Thank you Will Lawrence. He’s a great candidate who is paying attention to this issue.”
Mason resident Randy, who lives across the street from one data center project and was featured in the viral “Michigan First” ad during the primary election also spoke, taking a shot at Tom Barrett, whom he reached out to multiple times and never received a response: “He never came. He has not come out to face constituents in Mason. But, Will does not forget Mason.”
Will Lawrence called Barrett “a prime example of the corruption rampant in DC.” He went on to say, “He has not faced the voters, he has not held a town hall. What he HAS done is take money from DTE and consumers while they lobby to bring hyperscale data centers into Michigan. The fact of the matter is, we don’t have a representative. The corporations have a representative, but we don’t.”
