LANSING, Mich. — For the Carter family, the first weekend of June was one for the history books. On Friday June 5th 2026, six-year-old Liam Carter, son of Chronicle News Publisher and Editor Yanice Y. Carter, proudly graduated from Kindergarten at Post Oak Academy, completing his second year in the school’s Chinese Immersion Program. Less than 24 hours later, he joined family, friends, and community leaders as The Chronicle News celebrated its 40th Anniversary Legacy Gala.

The back-to-back milestones created a memorable weekend that highlighted both the legacy of a community institution and the promise of its next generation. Dressed in his cap and gown, Liam received his certificate of recognition during Post Oak Academy’s Kindergarten graduation ceremony. The achievement marked the completion of his second year studying Mandarin through the school’s Chinese Immersion Program, which introduces students to language learning and global cultural experiences at an early age.

For his mother, the occasion was especially meaningful. “One day I was celebrating my son completing Kindergarten, and the very next day we were celebrating 40 years of The Chronicle News,” Carter said. “It reminded me that legacy isn’t just about looking back at what has been built. It’s also about investing in the next generation and preparing them to carry that legacy forward.”

Founded in 1986 by Larry “Jay Price” Carter and Carolyn Carter, The Chronicle News has spent four decades documenting the stories, achievements, and history of Greater Lansing’s African American community. The anniversary celebration honored that legacy while looking ahead to the future of community journalism.

For Liam, the weekend represented the beginning of his own journey. As he prepares to enter first grade this fall, he does so having already completed two years of Mandarin instruction, demonstrating curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning that his family hopes will continue to grow. While the Chronicle’s 40th anniversary celebrated four decades of impact, Liam’s graduation served as a reminder that every legacy begins with a first step.

Congratulations to Liam Carter, Post Oak Academy Kindergarten Class of 2026. The future is bright, and his story is just beginning
