LANSING, Mich. — Quality Dairy suspended production at its Lansing bakery following a state food-safety inspection Oct. 8 that identified sanitation and pest-control concerns, according to reporting by WILX News 10.

Company President and CEO Ken Martin said Quality Dairy was working with outside specialists and conducting additional environmental testing. The company reported that its retail stores and other food production remained operational.

The inspection has renewed attention to the company’s food-safety history. In May 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Quality Dairy a warning letter documenting pest activity and sanitation deficiencies at its manufacturing facility following inspections in 2019 and January 2020. In April 2021, the FDA issued a closeout letter indicating the company appeared to have addressed the violations cited in the warning letter.

The historical findings do not establish that the same issues were present during the October inspection. The latest inspection report, any follow-up findings and the requirements for resuming bakery production are needed to clarify the scope of the current concerns.
